Classic Vanilla Frosting
Classic Vanilla Frosting is smooth, creamy, and perfectly sweet, making it the ideal topping for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and layered desserts. It has a light, fluffy texture with a rich buttery flavor balanced by warm vanilla. This frosting is simple to prepare, reliable, and versatile, which is why it remains a timeless favorite in home baking.
Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened, 3Β½ to 4 cups powdered sugar, 2β3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, a pinch of salt.
Preparing the Frosting
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy. Add the powdered sugar gradually, mixing on low speed at first to avoid a mess, then increasing speed as it incorporates. Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, then pour in the milk or cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
Whipping for Texture
Beat the frosting on medium to high speed for 2β3 minutes until light, fluffy, and pale in color. This step adds air and gives the frosting its classic soft texture.
Using the Frosting
Use immediately to frost cakes or cupcakes, or store covered until ready to use. If the frosting thickens, beat in a small splash of milk to refresh it.
Tips
Use room-temperature butter for the smoothest result. Sift powdered sugar if it is lumpy. Adjust sweetness and thickness by adding more powdered sugar or milk as needed.
Storage
Store frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
