Ingredients
Scale:
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup granulated sugar
2 ½ teaspoons instant yeast
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)
2 large eggs, at room temperature
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar (for glazing)
1-2 tablespoons milk (for glaze consistency)
Chocolate chips or sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, instant yeast, salt, and nutmeg. Whisk together until well mixed.
In a separate bowl, whisk the warmed milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients while mixing with a wooden spoon or your hands until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1-2 hours.
Once risen, punch down the dough to release excess air and roll it out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness.
Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters, cut out ring shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Allow the donuts to rise for another 30-40 minutes.
While the donuts are rising, heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully fry the donuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown.
For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar and milk in a bowl until smooth. Dip the cooled donuts in the glaze and sprinkle with chocolate chips or colorful sprinkles.
