Description
A beloved Italian-American dish that combines the comforting flavors of pizza with the convenience of a handheld meal.
Ingredients
Scale:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup sliced pepperoni
- ½ cup bell peppers, diced
- ½ cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 egg
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- In a mixing bowl, combine mozzarella, Parmesan, pepperoni, bell peppers, mushrooms, and Italian seasoning. Mix well.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 12x16 inches.
- Spread the cheesy filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a log, pinching the seams and ends to seal thoroughly.
- Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the stromboli.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the stromboli to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
