Ingredients
Scale:
3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted butter)
1 teaspoon instant yeast
Optional fillings: cooked pork, chicken, or vegetables seasoned with soy sauce; sweet red bean paste; chopped scallions and cream cheese
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring continuously until a shaggy dough begins to form.
Add the vegetable oil and mix until fully incorporated.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Form the kneaded dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough, divide it into equal portions (about 10-12), and shape each into a ball.
If adding fillings, flatten each piece, place a spoonful of filling in the center, and seal tightly.
Place each bun on parchment paper and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, covered with a damp cloth.
Prepare your steamer and steam the rolls for 15-20 minutes.
Once steamed, remove gently and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm.
